Each year two $500 scholarships will be presented.  One will be presented to a boy applicant and one will be presented to a girl applicant.  These scholarships will be one time grants designed to assist the students in higher education.  The award will be directed to the educational institution on behalf of the recepient.  In the event a selected student fails to enroll and commence attendance at that or some other qualifying institution within eight months after graduation from Rock Island High School, the scholarship will be forfeited.  Forfeiture may be waved for an additional four months upon student request, a showing of extreme hardship and/or unusual circumstances beyond the control of the student, and approval of the Bender Scholarship Committee.  Funds may be used for tuition, books & instructional materials, and/or on-campus room and board.

CRITERIA:

Must be a 12th grade student in good standing of a varsity athletic team at Rock Island High School.  Team member is defined as player, manager, trainer, or statistician.

Must have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Must use the scholarship for attendance at a fully acredited university, college, or junior college; must attend such institution as a full-time student.

Must be a person of outstanding charachter and citizenship in both community and school.

Must submit a written recommendation from his/her varsity athletic coach with certification of twelfth grade participation in good standing.

Must submit two additional references from teachers attesting to the applicant's charachter and citizenship.

Must submit a certified copy of the applicant's grade transcript showing no less than seven semesters of completed course work.

Must complete and submit a HARVEY M. BENDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP application (available in the counseling office).

For application purposes, participation in a spring sport which might occur after the application deadline, may be certified by the varsity coach based on the student't past participation, knowledge of the student's intent to participate during the twelfth grade year, and knowledge of the coach that the student will qualify for participation.  If the student is selected as an intended recipient, a second certification letter from the coach shall be submitted attesting to actual good standing participation.
