Student Stories
Hi. Welcome to my Hell. It‚s exactly my fourteenth year living in
this aircraft and what is my birthday present? I‚ll tell you, the
spaceship fuel is low and all I can hear is screaming; don‚t you wish
you had that present? I didn‚t think so. Seasons Greetings, from the
year 3022, you want to know what happened? Well, I‚ll tell you what
happened. Here‚s my storyΣ
„No!‰ James‚ 10-year-old little brother screamed. „But don‚t you want the ice cream?‰ I coaxed him.
„You‚re
acting like a total baby,‰ James muttered under his breath. „Just take
the Ice Cream Nick!‰ James said irritably as he added, „You should be
thankful for it anyways‰
„No! The Ice cream is like Goodies!‰ Nick
cried. Goodies, was Nick and James‚ grandfather, who was captured by
the Guangon aliens two months ago and hasn‚t been seen since.
„Let‚s just go‰ I sighed.
„What?
Don‚t you want to stay at the mall?‰ James asked me as he sat down on a
little bench, the benches were located all over the mall.
„Naw, I‚m a little tired‰ I lied. „Besides, can‚t I get some rest the day before my birthday?‰ I asked smirking.
James
shrugged. „What else is there to do in this place? Let‚s go back to my
apartment,‰ He added as they walked through the hallways.
Did I
mention I lived in space? Yes, well, my friends, my family and everyone
else who used to live on this so-called Œplanet Earth‚ now live in this
huge aircraft in space. I guess in 2041 there was this huge catastrophe
on planet Earth and now we ended up here, it‚s nice though, everyone
has their own apartment, you know everyone and everything you could
ever want is up here. At least I thought it was.
„You know what,
never mind‰ James said shaking his head, his black hair running into
his emerald eyes. „I‚m just going to take Nick home, ŒNight Marie, see
you later Space hater‰ he added turning around in the blue hallway.
I
pursed my lips, now to go home to my family. I didn‚t hate my family; I
just got very annoyed with them. I slid my key into slot 222 on the
door and walked in to find my mother making cookies in the oven, I
swear, we were the only people on this ship to have an oven. Not only
did we have an oven, but everything else was old fashioned too, we had
a beige couch in front of a T.V. which no one had anymore, they just
had giant e-boxes, and then we had this big, honking laptop-e-box thing
that sat on the couch, just sitting there, old and decrepit.
„Marie,
come try some of this batter.‰ My mom said with a smile, her wrinkles
creasing at her eyes. I sighed; I couldn‚t say no, that would upset her
little graying head. „Mmm‰ I said taking the spoon out of her hand and
tasting it. „Best batter yet,‰ I said. „Just hope your brother Jake
thinks that as well,‰ She said with a grin.
Her brother, Jake, was
sort of an outcast in the family, the only person he talked to was
well, me. During the days, he stayed locked up in his room on his e-box
and at night he was with all of his weird eighteen year old friends. He
had such a nice life, NOT, but it was all his fault my mother
overprotected me, reminding me never to turn out like him.
„Sweetie Pie, who‚s all coming to your party, is your little boyfriend coming?‰ she asked.
I
turned my head to look at her. „He is NOT my boyfriend mom, he‚s my
best friend.‰ I said, my face turning red, ok, maybe I had a little
crush on him, but what girls didn‚t have a crush on the irresistible
James?
„Mhmm‰ my mom replied turning around; I could almost see the smile that was planted on her face.
„I‚m
going to talk to Jake‰ I announced suddenly leaving and going into the
room with stickers all over the door reading ŒDo not enter, caution,
guangons playing poker in here‚ and other stupid stuff like that. I
knocked our secret knock.
„Jake! It‚s me,‰ I yelled into the slot
hole. I jumped back as the door opened, that scares me every time I
swear. I looked into his room. It was simple and small, there was a
dingy little bed in the corner, a small window by his plastic desk
holding his e-box and last, a little walk-in closet that went into the
ground so it didn‚t take up much space and best of all, was barely
visible, and there, there was Jake; His dyed black hair was down to his
shoulders with the tips dyed blonde. Who came up with hair dying
anyway? Jake‚s eyes were just like mine, big and blue.
„What‚s going on Jake?‰ I said as I sat down on his bed, brushing my dirty blonde hair aside.
„Nothing,
nothing‰ He said closing some windows on his e-box. If your uneducated,
an e-box is a small box no bigger than your face and gets Internet
connection and has games, if you have enough credits (money), you can
even order food out of it. It‚s pretty cool, I can understand why my
brother is always on it, and hopefully I‚ll get one for my fourteenth
birthday.
„Going to hang out with the gang tonight‰ He added closing
his eyes real quick as he rolled up his sleeves. There were three blue
marks on his wrist, which was his gang marking.
„Can I come with?‰ I
asked hopefully. I always wanted to come to one of their hang out
nights, Jake would always come home around five a.m. and slept till
midday. I always wanted to do that.
„No, No, Marie, you‚re much too
young, wait till you‚re my age and maybe, if that old bat will get off
your back‰ Jake said making a disgusted face; you could tell that he
and our mother didn‚t get along.
I rolled my eyes. „Whatever‰ I
sighed as I got up. „Just don‚t get in trouble,‰ I said as I walked out
and the door slammed behind me. I hated doors, they were so automatic,
I had heard rumors that back on planet Earth there were doors that
weren‚t automatic.
„I‚m going to James‚, be back in the morning,‰
I said to my mother. „Tell dad goodnight for me‰ I added as I started
to walk out.
„Goodnight, and Happy early birthday‰ She said kissing me on the forehead.
„Bye‰ I said walking out on her. „See you tomorrow‰ I added.
As
I walked into the hallway, I looked out the window into the ample
space. There were so many stars and sometimes, if we were lucky, we
went by huge planets. Once in a while we are attacked by meteorites but
other than that, we were pretty much safe. But lately, there had been
some kidnapping from the Guangons. I walked over to James‚; it wasn‚t
that far from my apartment.
I knocked right as the door opened and
there was James and his awesome crib apartment, with a giant e-box and
all, and even better, it was all chrome colored. „Hey, ready to have
the greatest time of your life?‰ he asked with a smile.
I shook my head. „No, we have a change of plans‰ I said with a small smile.
„And what are these Œplans‚?‰ James asked with an eyebrow raised.
„We‚re going to spy on my brother, here let‚s go into your room. I‚ll show you,‰ I said walking into his room.
I sat down on his bed and quickly the door shut behind James. „Ok, so, what‚s the plan?‰ He asked sitting down next to me.
„Well, we can hide in the garbage binΣ‰ I started. „And we can see them from the vent.‰ I added.
„The Garbage?‰ James asked. „That‚s a little gross.‰ He said scrunching up his nose.
„What? Don‚t tell me your scared?‰ I scoffed. „You shouldn‚t be scared anyway, you‚re the boy‰
„Fine, let‚s go‰ James said grumpily getting off of the bed.
I smiled at him. „Ok, c‚mon‰ she said checking his watch. Nine o‚ clock, her brother would be out by now.
„Why
are we doing this again?‰ James whispered as they left his apartment,
my bare feet touching the smooth metal ground, I took off my shoes
because they made too much noise.
„Haven‚t you ever wondered what
the gangs did?‰ I whispered back, shivering slightly, it was a little
drafty in the hallway at the moment.
„Ya, I guess‰ James shrugged as
they came to a ladder at the end of the hallway. The metal ladder lead
into the garbage bin where they would hide, on the other side of the
the garbage bin there were two vents that led into the only place you
could be after curfew without getting space duty. You did not want
space duty, it‚s when you have to get into a big thick space suit and
go outside to watch for trouble. I never had it, but it sounds awful.
„Ew, it smells gross in here‰ I muttered.
„You‚re choice of place‰ James said looking out of the vent. „Look there they are‰ James added.
I just looked out when I heard a voice. I suddenly felt myself go
dizzy. „What are you two hoodlums doing?‰ A deep voice boomed out.
„Uh-oh‰ James said as he turned around seeing the leader of the spacecraft.
„Um, nothing‰ I said with a small smile, James and I were in trouble.
Big trouble. The leader of our spaceship, Percy Westin, stared at them,
his face getting redder.
„I need to know what your
apartment number is to contact your parents, and your punishment will
be a night of space duty‰ Percy said with a sly smile, he kind of liked
giving out punishments.
I could feel my eyes starting
to water. „No, please, give us another chance‰ I pleaded as I glanced
over at James who was just staring in disbelief. What was wrong with
Percy? James and I were just two innocent kids.
„I‚m
sorry.‰ Percy said shaking his head. „Now lets get you down from here
and take you up to my office‰ he said as he started to climb down the
ladder.
I looked glumly at James who looked back at me
with the same face as we climbed down the stairs. The pit of my stomach
had dropped and my mouth was dry, but the worse thing was, what was my
mom going to say? Space duty at age thirteen, this would definitely go
on my permanent record.
„Follow me‰ Percy said sternly
as his shoes clicked repeatedly against the metal floor as he walked. I
followed with my head down; I watched my shoes walk forward.
After it seemed like hours, James and I were at Percy‚s office, we sat
down on his couch while he got out these giant white spacesuits.
„What are your apartment numbers?‰ Percy asked.
„222‰ I said looking at the spacesuits with terror, they would be out in space, alone, with only each other.
„245‰ James said. I looked over at him, but his face was so blank I couldn‚t read his expression.
„Now, You two will get into these suits, and I will be back in here
after calling your parents and then, you will go out on space duty‰ He
said with a sly smile as he walked out.
The second he
was out I blurted, „That vile man! I can‚t believe he‚s making us go
out into space!‰ I bellowed with tears running down my cheeks.
„It will be alright‰ James said, tears in his eyes as he hugged me.
„Let‚s just get in these suits and get it over with,‰ He added with a
weak smile.
I nodded, my heart crestfallen, I never wanted my birthday like this, but it could only get worse.
I tugged on the huge suit, it was a little big for my small frame but it was ok. Suddenly Percy came back in.
„Here, you hold these‰ He said handing them red buttons. „If you see
any danger press them,‰ He added with a smirk. „Now, go into that room
and you will be released into space on cords, you will be let back in
in two hours exactly‰ he said tapping his watch.
James
and I nodded as Percy connected the cords to our suits and off we went
into the other room, clutching the red button pressers for life. As we
entered the room, a gust of wind hit us, we definitely weren‚t use to
this, but we were suddenly before a wide expanse of space. It was so
beautiful. I felt like I was free and could just float away and live
peacefully ever after.
As we stepped off the space ship
we really did float away, the only thing holding us back was the cords.
I felt like I was on a weight loss machine, my body only weighing a
pound, not even.
It was a fantastic feeling and James
and I were barely out there for five minutes when suddenly I saw a
spaceship coming. I looked far out and it looked big and green, just
like the Guangons spaceship.
„James! James! Look‰ I said
through the walkie-talkie in the space suit. James directed his glance
to the spaceship that was getting closer and closer. James and I
started pressing the red button frantically wanting to get pulled back
in, but the spaceship was getting closer and closer they could almost
see the fat faces of the Guangons when they were finally being pulled
back in.
„What? What?‰ Percy asked agitated.
I pulled off my helmet and pointed out the window. „Guangons‰ I said breathlessly.
I watched as his eyes widened. He quickly picked up an intercom and
said „Guangons advancing, Help, I repeat, help‰ He said. „You two get
to safety‰ He said but as soon as they got to a door they heard a great
crash. The Guangons space pod had adhered itself to the side of the
spaceship and a Guangon got out of the pod and cut a hole in the metal
and stepped in.
I don‚t know if you have ever seen a
Guangon, but they are big ugly creatures that are very pudgy. They have
green and yellow bumpy skin and squat faces. Their stubby arms could
barely carry a gun, but their long fast legs made up for it. They were
awful creatures that had an addiction to killing humans.
I let out a scream and started to run. I heard a shoot of the Guangons
laser gun and a cry came out of Percy, good-bye our leader.
I looked behind me and saw James was following close behind. „Hurry!‰ I squealed scared for my life.
„Run faster!‰ James yelled, from the Panic in his voice, I could tell that the Guangons were fast on his tail.
„To my apartment‰ I yelled, as it was the closest. I slid my card into
the door and ran into my apartment, James quickly ran in, leaning
against the door.
„Phew‰ I said wiping my forehead, glad that was over
„Don‚t
Jinx ˆ„ James started to say, but he was cut off by a loud bang on the
door, it was starting to crack off the hinges. „What do we do?!‰ James
asked frantically.
„Quick‰ I said running into my brother‚s room, as
soon as James got into Jakes room the Guangon got into my apartment.
„Here‰ I whispered stepping into Jakes underground walk in closet.
James looked around at all the messy clothes; at least they were safe for the moment.
I
could hear the Guangon come in and look around and with a grunt, it
left. I let out a sigh of relief. „That was close,‰ I said opening the
closet door.
„We need to get some help,‰ James said. I check my
watch. One o‚clock a.m. „Aww, I missed my birthday,‰ I said with a
little pout.
„Build a flying saucer and get over it‰ James said with a roll of his eyes. „Let‚s go,‰ He added.
„Ok‰
I said climbing out. „We need weapons,‰ I said thinking as I put my
finger to my lip. „Oh! I know, we can use my grannies silverware, it‚s
sharp,‰ I said with a smile as I went into our kitchen and took out
some forks and knives. I handed a few to James.
„Ready Freddy?‰ I asked right before the door opened. James nodded gulping.
I
walked out, knife in one hand, fork in the other. I looked around the
corner, looked like the course was clear. Suddenly the power flickered.
„Oh no, we can‚t be going out of power‰ James said with a frown.
„Oh
yes we can, and we have‰ I said, they were in darkness when suddenly I
heard a grunt. I threw the knife in that direction and a blood-curling
shriek was out as a Guangon lay dead on the ground.
„Let‚s get out of here,‰ James said with a grim look.
„Marie! Marie!‰ A familiar voice called out.
„Mom?‰ I said looking and feeling for her. „MOM!‰ I said hugging her.
„Quick, we can get out of here‰ she said with a small smile.
„How Mrs. White, how?‰ James asked eagerly as he took her arm to keep her from falling as the spaceship shuttered.
„There is a mini spaceship that can take us to planet Earth where there is unlimited space for us to live‰ She gasped.
„Get them!‰ A gruff voice said and suddenly four or five Guangons came out of the darkness.
„Go
Marie, I love you, and will always love you, forever and ever!‰ my
mother yelled after me. Tears ran out of my eyes as I ran the other
way, as I ran away from my mother‚s death. I didn‚t care who was
following me, I didn‚t care if I lived or not, all I wanted to be was
somewhere safe. The last thing I remember was falling on the ground and
blanking out.
„Owww‰ I muttered under my breath as I rubbed my head, there was a thick bandage around it and I was in a Σ hospital bed.
„See your up‰ Jake said with a smile.
„Oh Jake, what happened?‰ I asked burying my face into his shoulder.
„Hm,
nothing really, you were just spying on me from the garbage bin and
James here, said you passed out and hit your head pretty hard, you‚ve
been unconscious for two days now‰ Jake said.
„So, mother isn‚t dead?‰ I asked confused.
„What?‰
Jake asked with a smile. „What are you talking about?‰ He asked. „Well,
Happy belated birthday‰ He said handing me an agglomeration of big and
small presents in all different colors.
„Thanks‰ I said starting to
open the tiniest one first. Inside was a necklace from her mother, it
was heart shaped and it read ŒMarie, I love you, and will always love
you, forever and ever.‚
